Bed in the Bush offers reasonably priced Quality Accommodation in the wilderness next to Kruger National Park. Special places are the Main House - deep shadowed verandas provide luxurious spaces and atmosphere in which to let the bush go by (Full Service) the Owl House - relax on a wide outside couch and watch an elephant strolling by (Self Catering) the Bush Camp - secluded, completely private "21st century African hut" (Self Catering) Positioned on a high rise in the otherwise flat lowveld landscape, spectacular Sun and Moon rises are experienced. Walk to your host for information about day trips, ranging from Bush walks and drives to art exhibitions and classical and jazz concerts.

CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES.

Dress code is bushveld casual and lightweight, but a sweater may be required. During the winter, June, July and August warm clothes are necessary during early morning and at night. A hat, sunscreen, flashlight and binoculars will add pleasure to your stay.

CLIMATE.

 Winter: May to September are mild to pleasant during daytime. However, nights can be cold, warm clothing is recommended. Summer: October to April - is hot to very hot with occasional rainfall. Protection from the sun is necessary.

PAYMENTS.

Please take note that no credit card facilities are available in the bush. Only cash or cheques are used.

MEALS.

Wholesome, MSG-free and fresh food, carefully prepared and presented, is offered at the Main House. Please make arrangements (essential) in advance should you require this facility.

DRINKS.

A »Cash Bar« is available at the Main House. Please help yourself and pay indicated prices at the bar.

WATER.

Untreated borehole water is used throughout. Every reasonable care is taken to keep water supply clean and fresh. Tests have qualified our water as, »the best in Phalaborwa«. Please use it wisely and enjoy it.

ALL LIFE IS PROTECTED – NO KILLING.

 No hunting is allowed. Alternatives to culling are sought. Natural methods of control and protection are encouraged and practiced. Living in Nature is a privileged experience. Rather than chase it, observe the wondrous ways of different species. You are specifically requested not to use any poisonous substances that may end up in a food chain.

MALARIA.

This being an area where Malaria is present, you are advised to use some protection on your self in the form of an insect repellent (Tabbard spray) and/or instructions from your doctor. Provided you do so, you will be at minimal risk of contracting Malaria. In a period of more than five years now, no one has contracted Malaria here.

You are in a Nature Reserve, adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Wild life of all descriptions may be encountered – please be mindful and respect this privilege. One never knows what one will come across next. As a rule, wild animals are not looking for people to bite or eat – there are other provisions for that. Provided you stick to the basic rules – you are probably in one of the safest places in the world

 The Main House

The Main House is a welcoming oasis that soon lures you into a relaxing mode, ready to pass out to the harmonious sounds of the African bush. The large en-suite bedrooms are all open out onto deep shadowed verandas, providing luxurious spaces and atmosphere in which to let the bush go by. Positioned on a high rise in the otherwise flat lowveld landscape, spectacular Sun and Moon rises are experienced.

The Owl House

Originally the cow sheds of a cattle farm, this charming cottage is called the »Owl House« because when building alterations started, Owls were living there. Being a unique and private facility, the Owl House soon became the favourite of a number of regular visitors.

Comprising two bedrooms, two bathrooms, outside shower, two patios and kitchen, it sleeps 3 indoors but have on occasion catered for up to 10 people - some pitching a tent and others sleeping outside in the open on beautifully crafted cement benches. (under roof – bring your own sleeping bags) From here, you can laze away the day while watching and listening to the weird and wonderful goings on of the wild.

Situated privately close to the Main House (about 100 metres away), you can enjoy some of the Main House attractions. Cool off in the nearby swimming pool, have breakfast or dinner while watching some amazing sun or moon rises with views over the Kruger National Park. On occasions attend a Concert, a Jazz evening or some of the special events that are on offer from time to time.

The Bush Camp

»It's a uniquely designed, African village style building in the middle of a glorious bush (Silonque Nature Conservancy). The Bush Camp is where traditional and modern elements have been beautifully combined in a house that feels like a 21st century African hut. Traditional blankets meet air-conditioned rooms; dung floors meet modern, silver-topped kitchens. Its been described as African Zen, which basically means its familiar yet other worldly and really hits the calm and quiet spots«

What to do in the Area

Kruger National Park. An exclusive facility from the Phalaborwa Gate into the Kruger National Park, is the privilege of being able to participate in activities normally only available inside the Park:
Guided Morning and Afternoon walks, Morning, Full day and Night drives and Night Drives with Bush Braais in the wild. Leaves daily from the Gate and can be arranged to suit your own requirements. Rates are negotiated on an hourly rate, depending on the time you want to spend and what your experience is like in the bush. On a good day you may want to spend the whole day – simply arrange with your guide!

Hans Merensky Estate. An 18 hole, par 72 championship golf course, restaurants, bars, tennis courts, swimming pools, hairdressing boutique & curio shop, all blend in with the Natural surroundings to provide an unforgettable experience to all visitors alike.

African Experience. Take a 'cultural trip' for anything from braaivleis and boeremusiek to jazz in the local fashion, or singing and dancing to mystical rythms on traditional drums in rural settings otherwise lost to the modern world?

River Cruises. Relax on a 3 hrs Sunrise or Sunset Cruise on the Olifants River.

Modjadji Cycad Forest. The famous cycad forest of Modjadji, the Rain Queen, near Tzaneen, Cycad (Encephalartos transvernosus) is one of the largest cycads in the world and it is a protected species.

Tsukudu Game Farm. Breakfast Walk with an elephant and watch a lion and dog playing like children in the veld - breakfast isn't bad either.

Silonque Sisters Farm

- an interaction with Nature and Culture

Situated North of Phalaborwa, adjacent to the world famous Kruger National Park, the farm Silonque Sisters was a founder member of the Silonque Nature Conservancy. A wide variety of wild life exists naturally in close contact and at peace with a permanent human presence.

Positioned on a high rise in the otherwise flat lowveld landscape, spectacular Sun and Moon rises are experienced. From the Main House, the archaeological site of Masorini Mountain sits like a mystical pyramid on the horison, in a constantly changing landscape of colours. Sunsets over mountains, 150 km away, form a wondrous part of the day. At night, you can experience anything from the dazzling display of millions of stars on a clear night, to dramatic thunderstorms, to windstill nights when the Lion’s roar tells you, you are close the heart of this fascinating Continent.

The terrain includes a number of dry river systems, an outcrop of interesting rocks (koppie) typical of the region, natural crystals, stones and sands. Diverse plant life, including the famous Maroela and amazing Mopane trees, Knobthorn, Waggebietjie, Apple Leaf, Kannie Dood, Bush Willow, Tambotie, Leadwood, Rock Fig... a variety of flowers, grasses, herbs and ground covers... all co-exist under some incredible circumstances.

Directions

BY CAR. A very scenic drive by road from Johannesburg, taking in the spectacular scenery of the Drakensberg Escarpment en route or take the freeway via Polokwane and tour through the spectacular Magoebaskloof and Tzaneen Eden of the Lowveld. Takes approximately 5 hours. Directions to Get Here. Come into Phalaborwa on the R71 from Gravelotte. At the Fourway Stop at the entrance to the town, turn left into Spekboom Street. 6 Kilometres further you will find our gate on the right hand side. From there it is 2 kms to the Main House.
